Goal Setting for Students
Goal Setting
We can be what we want to be. At the first glance it seems very
confusing however one may think and ask, "Does it mean that a
person will acquire whatever he desires?" May it be to be a
millionaire or to excel in a chosen field or to conquer great
heights and things like that? But this is not the proper way to
interpret the statement. It does not work automatically. Desires
are endless and immeasurable. It is not always possible to
achieve whatever one desires.
One can realize the importance and significance of the subject
after viewing and analyzing it properly and carefully. There are
two things we have to talk about the 'Result' and the 'Goal'.
We can be = Result What we want to be = Goal
It includes both the result and the Goal. But between the result
and the goal there is a long path that has to be followed to
accomplish the desired goal and the path has to be decided on
the basis of the goal that you have set for your-self. After you
have set a goal you have to start working on it. Often you would
say that you have set the goal and that you are trying to
achieve it but, let me tell you, there is nothing like trying
let me clarify it with one example which was illustrated by one
of Management Guru's in his class. He called one of the
students, who had said that he would try to improve his grading,
and asked him to try to pick up a book that was lying on his
desk. Once he picked up the book the Guru asked him to just try
to hold the book and not to actually hold it. The student was
surprised and replied, "Sir how can I do it. I can either
hold
the book or I cannot hold it there is nothing in between." Guru
smiled and said, "Son this is what I am telling you. You can
either do a thing or you do not do it. There is nothing like
trying." When you say, "I will try to improve my grading." You
are actually saying that you are not going to do it or that you
will not put your wholehearted effort in doing so and thus
success is unlikely to be achieved. I hope you have got the
message right. After having set a clear goal and choosing a
carefully selected path you have to get on to work on it full
throttle.
Aims Behind Setting The Goal: Generally a person has following
four fold aims while setting the Goal: -
1. Academic excellence. 2. Financial gains. 3. Post and
position. 4. Popularity in their respective fields.
This is not enough. Beside these, one should also consider
following points while setting and finalizing the goals and see
whether his goals satisfy following criterion: -
